Blue Eye is one of Albania’s most striking natural springs, hidden among dense forest between the cities of Sarandë and Gjirokastër. Known locally as “Syri i Kaltër,” the spring gets its name from the deep sapphire center that looks like a human eye, surrounded by lighter turquoise water.
The water is incredibly clear and cold year-round, usually around 10°C (50°F), because it rises from a deep underground source whose full depth is still not precisely known. Sunlight reflecting through the crystal water creates vivid blue and green shades that change throughout the day.
The area around the spring is peaceful and shaded, with wooden walkways, flowing streams, and lush vegetation. Visitors often stop there while traveling between the Albanian Riviera and southern inland towns. Although swimming has sometimes been restricted to protect the environment, many people still visit for the scenery, fresh air, and natural beauty.
It’s especially popular as a short nature stop during trips to Butrint National Park and the beaches of Ksamil.

Gjirokastër is a historic stone city in southern Albania, famous for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture, steep cobblestone streets, and mountain scenery. Often called the “City of Stone,” it is built along the slopes of a valley beneath a large hilltop castle, giving the town a dramatic layered appearance.
The old town is filled with traditional stone houses that feature slate roofs, wooden balconies, and fortified towers once built for wealthy families. Many of these homes have been preserved for centuries and reflect the blend of Balkan and Ottoman culture that shaped the region.
Above the city stands the impressive Gjirokastër Castle, one of the largest castles in the Balkans. From its walls, visitors can see wide views of the Drino Valley and surrounding mountains. Inside the castle are historic exhibits, old military artifacts, and spaces used for cultural festivals.
The city is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its unique architecture and historical importance. Small cafés, handmade craft shops, and traditional Albanian restaurants line the narrow streets of the bazaar area, creating a calm and authentic atmosphere.
Gjirokastër is also known as the birthplace of Albanian writer Ismail Kadare and former leader Enver Hoxha, making it an important cultural and historical center in Albania.
